Land Surface Processes

CORES research scientists have extensive experience in energy budget, hydrological and land surface modelling, with a particular focus on snow-soil-vegetation interactions. Our team is involved both in model development and in the evaluation and quantification of model errors and uncertainties. Previous to joining CORES, our team members have worked on the development and evaluation of the UK community land surface model JULES, FSM, SNOBAL and SPA. Our in-house distributed energy balance model was developed specifically to investigate the energy budget of heterogeneous landscapes; operational applications of the models include the quantification of shrub expansion on local climate in the Yukon, Canada and the investigation of reindeer grazing as mitigation to climate change in Fennoscandia.
